Tribute to Helmut Wiebe

After nearly 20 years on the field with South Delta, our incredible goalkeeping coach Helmut is retiring.

Helmut has been much more than a coach—he’s been a mentor, a role model, and a true inspiration. His dedication to the game and to his players has shaped not only outstanding goalkeepers, but also confident, committed young people who carry his lessons far beyond the field.

Over the years, Helmut has guided players of all levels—from grassroots keepers to those who went on to play at university, join the Whitecaps Academy, and even represent Canada at the youth level. Just as importantly, he celebrated every player’s journey, big or small, with pride and joy.

To honor his legacy, SDU is proud to introduce the annual Helmut Wiebe Goalkeeper Award—a lasting tribute to the dedication, spirit, and love for the game that he shared with us all.

The first-ever recipient, Toodoo Yangdeming Qi, was chosen personally by Helmut—an incredible honor that reflects the values and passion he instilled in every keeper. Congratulations Toodoo!
